Sean Howard: Why Him?
by Camela Thompson
The concept for my story was a driving force. I’m an analytical person who likes to pre-plan, but this story was marching through my brain and I had to get it on paper. It was only going to be about Olivia and Mark, but a murder scene popped in my head and some of the circumstances were abnormal, to say the least. The next thing I knew, I was hedging into a world where the supernatural was possible, and I naturally needed two detectives. This kicked off a series of questions in my head.
What if one of the detectives was from Olivia’s past?
What if this detective still loves her even though she broke his heart? Ooooh…. What if he is really attractive and smart?
What if this detective has a family?
These questions opened up a can of worms. Actually, that’s putting it mildly. A can of frogs was opened and each of those frogs had a top hat and danced to a different tune. Chaos ensued and I struggled with my own morals, which led to me fighting what my character would actually do. I wrote scenes with Sean doing things that weren’t consistent with his character, and my early beta readers let me know it wasn’t working. Sean wasn’t working. I wanted people to like Sean (I wanted to like Sean), but he had to make his mistakes.
I don’t believe in creating perfect characters. Despite the fact that I’m writing fiction, it seems disingenuous to create someone without faults. Our mistakes and flaws are what make us human. Sean makes a lot of bad choices, and his interest in Olivia is very unhealthy. Underneath that, Sean is a good man. He tries so hard to do the right thing by his family and he follows a strict moral code. Both Mark (the antagonist) and Sean are fixated to an unnatural degree with Olivia, but Sean had the strength to walk away when Olivia broke things off and respects her wishes.
Some people won’t like Sean, and that’s okay. The poor guy is doing his best.
Despite dabbling in many genres, there is a driving force behind my stories. I love writing about women who shine in difficult circumstances. I will back them up against the wall and sit amazed as they manage to come out on the other side stronger than ever.
